The World Boxing Organisation (WBO) has today released a statement saying that they will not give a green light to a WBO/IBF Middleweight unification fight between WBO champion, Dmitry Pirog of Russia and IBF champion, Daniel Geale of Australia which was targeted for late August on HBO.

“No one can talk about a unification bout without a written sanction letter from the WBO, and for this bout there is no approval,” said WBO President Francisco Valcarce.

“Dmitry Pirog will face the winner of the May 4th bout between Hassan N’Dam & Max Bursak within 90 days of the bout.”

What happens next is up to Pirog whether he decides to vacate his title to face Geale. Another issue is whether HBO will still televise the fight without both belts being on the line.
